The Road to the WIAA State Tournament: An Incredible Challenge

For high school wrestlers across Wisconsin, the dream of making it to the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament is the pinnacle of their hard work, dedication, and perseverance. With only the top 16 wrestlers in each weight class earning a coveted spot at the Kohl Center, the journey to Madison is anything but easy.

The Brutal Grind to State

Wrestling is one of the most physically and mentally demanding sports, requiring athletes to maintain strict weight control, endure grueling training sessions, and battle through intense competition. The state tournament isn't just a competition—it's the ultimate test of endurance, strength, and strategy.

Every wrestler who steps onto the mat at state has already survived the gauntlet of conference, regional, and sectional tournaments—a feat that is incredibly difficult in itself. Many talented wrestlers never get the opportunity to compete under the bright lights of Madison, making state qualification an accomplishment in its own right.

Greenfield's State Qualifiers: Battling Among the Best

This year, Greenfield was represented by two wrestlers: Julean Rouleau (106 lbs) and Gavin St John (175 lbs). While their tournament runs didn't end on the podium, simply qualifying speaks volumes about their skill and determination.

D1-106: Julean Rouleau (40-11)

  • Championship Round 1: Rouleau faced a tough opponent in Braiden Hale-Toomey (Reedsburg Area, 46-5), falling by pin in 1:24.
  • Consolation Round 1: In a razor-close match, Everett Hilby (New Berlin West/Eisenhower, 34-11) edged out Rouleau 8-7 by decision.

While Rouleau's run at state ended earlier than he hoped, he proved that he belongs among the best wrestlers in Wisconsin.

D1-175: Gavin St John (37-15)

  • Championship Round 1: St John battled Eli Leonard (Mount Horeb/Barneveld, 48-1), falling via technical fall (15-0) in 2:31.
  • Consolation Round 1: He then faced Landen Grow (Beaver Dam, 36-9), again losing by technical fall (18-3) in 3:23.

Though the tournament didn't go as planned, St John's season was nothing short of remarkable, solidifying himself as one of the top 16 wrestlers at 175 lbs.

A Testament to Hard Work

Both Rouleau and St John exemplify the grit and dedication required to reach this elite level. Making it to state is a massive achievement—one that many wrestlers chase but few attain. The experience gained from competing against Wisconsin's best will only fuel their future successes.

For those who dream of stepping onto the state tournament mat, the road is long and full of obstacles. But for those willing to embrace the grind, the reward is priceless.

Congratulations to Greenfield's state qualifiers on an outstanding season!
