The Greenfield girls wrestling team turned in a gritty team effort at the Blackshirt Invite on Thursday, December 5, showcasing multiple podium finishes and a slate of hard-fought matches against tough competition.
Leading the way was Angela Xiong (107 lbs), who put together an outstanding tournament to finish runner-up in her bracket and score 28 team points. After an early setback, Xiong caught fire, reeling off four straight wins — all by fall — including quick pins over opponents from Mukwonago, New Berlin West/Eisenhower and Waukesha to climb her way to second place.
At 235 lbs, Stephanie Rodriguez battled through a loaded field to place 4th and earn 19 team points. Rodriguez opened with back-to-back pins and advanced deep into the championship side of the bracket, picking up big wins and valuable experience along the way. Rodriguez would have finished in the top 2, however, sustained a shoulder injury not allowing her to continue.
Gianna Wagner (120 lbs) also brought home a 4th-place finish and 19 team points. Wagner started the day with a lightning-fast first-period pin and added another fall and a forfeit victory to power her run into the semifinals and the placing rounds.
In the upper weights, Nuriah Kaabachi (185 lbs) wrestled her way to 4th place, scoring 11 team points. Kaabachi recorded a key pin in the quarterfinals and continued to battle through a tough lineup of opponents to earn a spot on the podium.
Rounding out the lineup were Nuvali Basurto (185 lbs) and Sophia Padilla Perez (235 lbs), who each fought through deep brackets and multiple consolation matches. While they came up short of the podium, both gained valuable varsity mat time that will pay off as the season continues.
From big pins to gritty consolation wins, the Hustlin' Hawks showed resilience and growth throughout the Blackshirt Invite. Greenfield will look to build on this momentum as they head into the heart of their schedule and continue to make noise on the girls wrestling scene.
