The Greenfield Hawks boys soccer team showcased resilience and high-level play in a challenging week that featured two top-tier opponents: Kenosha Bradford and state-ranked Elkhorn.
Hard-Fought Contest vs. Kenosha Bradford
In a physical, end-to-end matchup with Kenosha Bradford, Greenfield ultimately fell 3-1 in a game that felt even closer than the scoreline suggests.
The first half was a chess match as Patrick Morgese, Logan Xiong, and Grant Greil each created dangerous looks, but the scoreboard stayed locked at 0-0. Coming out of halftime, the Hawks kept the pressure on, repeatedly striking the post and crossbar before Kenosha broke through twice to take a 2-0 advantage.
Greenfield answered when Xiong buried a goal off a sharp feed from Morgese to cut the deficit to 2-1. Owen Englehardt nearly found the equalizer with several near-misses, including a strike off the post, but the Hawks' late push was met with a final Kenosha counter to seal the 3-1 result.
Statement Performance Against No. 4 Elkhorn
Just two days later, the Hawks faced one of the state's best, traveling to meet Division 2's No. 4-ranked Elkhorn—last year's state runner-up. Greenfield adjusted its approach to control the tempo, playing composed, possession-based soccer from the back through defensive leaders Vincent Ortega, Nathan Fernandez, and Uriel Sanchez.
The Hawks outshot and out-possessed the Elks, yet Elkhorn made the most of limited chances, scoring on a first-half corner and capitalizing on a rare miscue to build a 2-0 lead. Greenfield's defense tightened after the break, holding Elkhorn scoreless and limiting them to just a few second-half looks. Freshman Jacoby Denk rewarded the sustained pressure late, finishing a well-worked play from Nico Barot to bring the final to 2-1.
