The Greenfield Hustlin' Hawks softball team took the field Wednesday night against a strong Pius XI Catholic squad, ultimately falling 7-0 in a competitive Woodland Conference matchup.
Despite the final score, the Hawks showed flashes of promise at the plate and on defense. Naomi Kleczynski led the offense with a pair of hits, including a triple that gave the Hawks a scoring opportunity. Maya Hornung also notched two hits, and Jamie Murray added a single to round out Greenfield's five-hit performance.
On the mound, the Hawks split pitching duties between Jasmine Lasky and Hornung. Lasky went 3.2 innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on seven hits while striking out one. Hornung provided 2.1 innings of relief, allowing two earned runs and striking out one.
Greenfield stayed competitive early, holding Pius scoreless through the first two innings before the Lady Popes broke things open with three runs in the third and added on in the following frames. Defensively, Kleczynski's aggressive baserunning and Lasky's efforts on the mound kept the team energized despite the uphill climb.
The Hawks (now 0-2 in recent contests) will look to bounce back in their next game and continue developing both their young talent and team chemistry.
Greenfield returns to action later this week with their eyes set on getting back into the win column.
