On Friday, May 2, the Greenfield Hustlin' Hawks softball team put up a tough fight but came up short in a 5-1 road loss to South Milwaukee.
The Hawks struggled to generate offense early, being held scoreless through the first six innings. Greenfield broke through with a run in the top of the seventh, but the comeback attempt was held in check by a solid South Milwaukee defense.
At the plate, Greenfield tallied six hits from six different players, including singles by Cali Rodriguez, Calla Gbur, EddieAna Velez, Jasmine Lasky, Jamie Murray, and Maya Hornung. Hornung also recorded the team's only RBI, driving in the lone run.
On the mound, Maya Hornung pitched a complete game, striking out five while allowing seven hits and three earned runs over six innings. Despite taking the loss, Hornung showed resilience and efficiency, throwing 84 pitches—58 of them for strikes.
Defensively, the Hawks committed two errors, which proved costly as South Milwaukee capitalized with key runs in the early innings and a three-run surge in the sixth.
Greenfield will look to bounce back in their next outing as they continue Woodland Conference play.
