The Greenfield Hawks baseball team's remarkable 2026 season came to an end Tuesday afternoon with a 7-0 loss to Marquette University High School in a WIAA Division 1 Sectional Semifinal.
While the result was not what the Hawks hoped for, the game capped off one of the most successful seasons in recent program history. Greenfield's appearance in the sectional round marked the program's first trip to sectionals since 2011, a testament to the growth, determination, and hard work displayed throughout the season.
Marquette struck early and took advantage of timely hitting to build a lead, but the Hawks continued to battle until the final out. Greenfield finished with three hits on the day and put runners on base throughout the game, drawing six walks against a talented Marquette pitching staff.
Senior centerfielder Brody Jens collected a double and scored one of the Hawks' three hits, while Cameron Gonzalez turned in an impressive performance at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. Ethan Miszewski showed tremendous patience at the plate, drawing three walks and helping keep offensive opportunities alive.
On the mound, Mason Grafwallner gave the Hawks a quality start, allowing just one earned run while striking out three over three innings of work. Ethan Hanke, Tyler Carey, and Devin Ueberfluss combined to close out the game in relief.
Although the season ended one step short of the sectional final, the Hawks accomplished something special this spring. From big conference victories to a deep postseason run, Greenfield consistently demonstrated resilience, teamwork, and a commitment to competing at a high level. The program's return to the sectional stage for the first time in 15 years is a milestone that reflects the dedication of the players, coaches, and supporters who helped make this season possible.
The Athletics Department extends its gratitude to the Hawks' senior class for their leadership and commitment to the program. Their efforts helped elevate Greenfield baseball and establish a foundation that future teams can build upon.
Congratulations to Head Coach James Zacher, his coaching staff, and the entire Hawks baseball program on an outstanding season. While the final score may not have gone Greenfield's way, the accomplishments of the 2026 Hawks will be remembered as a significant chapter in the history of Greenfield baseball.
